As one of the first and probably the most successful e-commerce websites, Amazon.com knows just how to maximise sales when Christmas comes around. Lets see what they are doing this year on their UK website.
Lets look at what Amazon hit you with straight away - "Free UK Delivery" - The most eye catching part of the page for me is "FREE UK Delivery" this is obviously a big attraction to anyone wanting to buy online.
- Christmas themeing - This works on two counts, I expect that the main reason for the themeing is to remind visitors who are visiting without Christmas in mind they can also purchase their Christmas presents at the same time.
The second purpose is conditioning, every year when Christmas comes around we buy each other gifts. The link between Christmas and spending money is quite high. So you are perhaps more likely to treat someone or yourself. - "Find great gift ideas" - They are not only selling to you, they are also telling you what to buy. For most people at Christmas deciding what to buy someone especially a family member is difficult. Having shown you what you should buy Amazon now has you in a vulnerable state. The relief of finding a solution to your present problem will encourage you to go ahead and buy so you can forget about it.
- "Homepage Intelligence" - If you have browsed the Amazon website prior to your this visit you will be given a customised page showing items that Amazon think you will be attracted to. Amazon does this by looking at other visitor habbits, in a sense the website is learning all the time.
