There are four questions I ask myself when deciding on the content of key pages during the website design process.
The purpose of a website is to serve the visitor, by doing so a business will have great success with their website. So as a website designer it is important to get into the mind set of a visitor and answer the following questions... - Why did I come here? - People don't visit websites for no reason, they want something from their visit. This could be entertainment, information or to acquire something. Spell it out to the visitor that you know why they came and that you can provide it. If I were looking for a new MP3 player and I found your website from searching Google for MP3 players I want to see immediately that I can purchase an MP3 player from you.
- What do I want to see when I visit this website to make me feel comfortable? - Looking for an MP3 player there are check boxes I have that will influence whether I feel comfortable purchasing from a website. These could be
- Professional design - in my opinion is this a professional company?
- Can I contact them directly if there is a problem, where are they?
- What information do I need to make a decision to take my visit further? - Does it look like they sell MP3 players and the brand I am looking for? Can I see a quick way of locating the MP3 player I am looking for?
- What possible objections would I have for using this company or its product/service? - Is there a reason or an expectation the visitor will have of a business sector that will negatively effect the choice of the visitor. For example a negative of an online electrical store could be not physically handling the MP3 player before deciding to purchase it. To overcome this perhaps a "no questions asked return policy" should be prominently featured on each page.
In my opinion getting the answers to these questions are the difference between a website that succeeds or fails. Last update : 29-10-2007 11:09
