It seems that we are having increased numbers of clients who don't have their domain name login details. So what are the options?
The usual reason for not having domain name details is losing touch with the person who registered the domain. Most commonly it is a website designer who is no longer trading. Always keep a copy of your own domain name details. Don't let your designer tell you they can't give you the details because all their domains are kept in one account. What will happen if you can no longer contact this person/company? How to regain control of your domain nameSo you've come to make some changes to your website and your new website designer has asked for your websites login details, but you don't have any login information from your past designer. What do you do? - First of all you need to find out which domain registration company has been used. This information is easy to find go to http://whois.domaintools.com/ and type in your domain name.
- In the "Whois Record" locate "Registrar" this is the company that holds the key to your domain. Copy the "URL" if provided into your browser, or Google them, to view this companies website.
- While you are viewing the "Whois Record" you should also check that the registrant details are correct for you. If they aren't correct the process for regaining ownership of your domain name will be tricky.
- Now that you have located the company you need to talk to you must find out how they deal with lost login details. Popular ways the registrar will confirm who you are:
- Fax your Certificate of Incorporation for Limited companies and request details on your companies letter headed paper.
- Send details to the registrants address
- Send details to the registrants email address
All of this can be time consuming especially if the registrants contact details are not correct. Some web designers use their own details which can cause further problems. Last update : 29-10-2007 09:54
